Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With 3 Magical Margaritas

Cinco de Mayo is tomorrow and what better way to celebrate than with some amazing margaritas. As far as tequila goes, I’m pretty snobby when it comes to good quality alcohol so I favor Patron Silver, but use what you have on hand or whatever tequila you like. You can serve these with a Mexican themed meal or tapas style (which is how I like to enjoy them). Whether you like yours frozen or on the rocks, with a salted or sugared rim- these (3) cocktail creations will have you swirling around like a pinata and dancing the Macarena like it’s 1994! Drink responsibly and Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Jalapeno Cilantro Margarita

  • ½ oz cilantro syrup (heat simple syrup and add cilantro)
  • juice of 1 lime – plus more for garnish
  • 2 oz of tequila
  • fresh jalapeño strips – plus more for garnish
  • salt to rim glass
  • ice
  • cilantro sprigs for garnish
  1. Rim glass with lime than dip in salt. Fill glass and cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add cilantro syrup, juice of lime, tequila and jalapeno strips to shaker – shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds.
  3. Pour through shaker strainer into salt rimmed glass and garnish with lime wedge, jalapeno ring(s) and cilantro sprig.

Grapefruit Aperol Margarita

  • sea salt
  • cane sugar
  • cinnamon
  • lime wedge
  • 3 oz ruby red grapefruit juice
  • 1 oz tequila
  • 1 oz grand marnier
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 oz aperol
  • 1/4 oz simple syrup or agave nectar
  • ice

1. Put a pinch of each salt and sugar on a flat, shallow plate, add a dash of cinnamon and mix to combine. Rub the lime wedge on the outside rim of a rocks glass. Holding the glass at an angle, dip the outside edge of the rim to coat thoroughly with the mixture.

2. Combine everything in a cocktail shaker, fill halfway with ice, and shake until thoroughly chilled, about 20 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass (with the cinnamon-sugar-salt rim, if desired) and serve.

Skinny Blood Orange Margarita

Margarita
  • 2 ounces silver/blanco tequila
  • 2 ounces fresh blood orange juice (about 1 large blood orange, juiced)
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice (about 1 lime, juiced)
  • 1 teaspoon light agave nectar
  • 1 tiny drop pure vanilla extract (optional)
Salt and brown sugar rim (use all salt if you want)
  • 2 teaspoons kosher sea salt and/or Himalayan salt
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional)
  • Lime wedges
  1. Mix together the salt and sugar on a small plate (preferably one just slightly larger than the top of your margarita glass). Run a wedge of lime around the top of your glass. Dip the top of the glass into the salt blend at a 45-degree angle and roll it from side to side to catch the salt. Add ice cubes to your glass and set it aside.
  2. Fill a small cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the tequila, freshly squeezed blood orange and lime juice and agave nectar. If desired, add a drop of vanilla extract.
  3. Put on the lid and shake for 30 seconds. Strain the liquid into your glass and garnish with a slice of blood orange, if desired.
